PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY RAM VAN STOP

As designers we are asked to create places for human activities, and one of the more difficult tasks is to make places for waiting. Often these waiting areas require shelter from the elements, a place of refuge or comfort. They also may delineate a boundary, or perhaps become a landmark. The success of the constructed physical object is determined by its ability to create a sense of place measured by the quality of the experience.

Perspective

On the campus of Philadelphia University, multiple “Ram Van” bus stops exist to move students safely, and efficiently from dormitory to classroom. The intention of this design is that the tectonics allow for derivations of the design to be placed at other locations on campus, thus giving each van stop its own unique identity.

Each shell of the Ram Van Stop consists of a polycarbonate rain screen. Underneath, the University logo laser cut into metal creating an identity from passer-byers. Allowing for a more interactive space than the traditional bus shelter, those waiting are encouraged to inhabit the space. Larger seating areas designed for multiple people, and an electronic information display is provided in an attempt to make waiting for a Ram Van enjoyable.
